First Steps for Preparing to Sell Your Home

It’s time to sell your home. Maybe you are relocating or you need to find a bigger home for your family. Either way, you have completed the first step to selling your home which is making the decision to do so. But now what?

You can start the selling process by doing a few simple tasks:

  • Declutter your home

You will want to have minimal to no clutter in your home. Go through each room in the home and determine what can be thrown away, donated, sold, and kept. If you have not used something in over a year it is likely time to get rid of it. Have a garage sale or post items to Craigslist or eBay to earn some extra money for those unused/unnecessary items. Another good idea is to rent a storage unit for the things you are not ready to give up but that you don’t necessarily need until after the move.

  • Depersonalize your home

You have spent years making memories in your home but sadly, you will want to take down photos/memorabilia of you and your family. When someone enters your home while it is for sale they want to envision their family photos on the walls. If they see the current family of the home they are less likely to be able to envision this. So pack up those pictures and start to depersonalize.

  • Add a fresh coat of paint

While you may love your bright red bathroom, it may not be for everyone. It’s nothing personal but people want to imagine their style in the home they are going to be purchasing. Put a fresh coat of paint in each room. Use neutral and light colors to make rooms appear bigger and brighter. Paint the trim or at least give it a serious cleaning. This may seem like a big pain but it will really help sell your home in the long run.

Once these tasks are completed contact your Realtor to come over for a consultation and market analysis. With the home already decluttered, depersonalized, and painted your Realtor should have a really good idea of what they can sell your home for and chances are it will be more than it was before you completed these tasks!
